Robusta coffee accounts for about 90% of the planted area in Vietnam. Due to its adaptability to climatic conditions and soil, Robusta thrives and yields high productivity, especially in the Central Highlands region. Robusta beans are smaller than Arabica beans but have a higher caffeine content, ranging from 2% to 4%. As a result, Robusta has a bold and strong flavor, which aligns with the taste preferences of many Vietnamese. In recent years, Robusta coffee has also gained popularity globally, particularly in the specialty coffee segment and high-quality coffee markets, including Roasted Natural Robusta.
Natural Robusta refers to Robusta coffee processed using the Natural/Unwashed method, with a high ripeness rate (≥97%). It is classified as a premium quality coffee. The cherries are harvested when fully ripe, cleaned, and carefully sun-dried. The coffee beans are dried directly under the sun for 1 to 3 weeks. When the outer skin shrinks, turning almost black, and the moisture content of the coffee decreases to 10-12%, the beans are then hulled.
Due to the natural sun-drying process and hulling after drying, the nutrients in the beans accumulate slowly, resulting in a flavorful bean with a low acidity level. After drying and hulling, the beans undergo sorting, weight grading, and color sorting. The color sorting process removes black, defective, broken, and underdeveloped beans, ensuring that only high-ripeness Natural Robusta beans are selected.
