History of Gia Lai Coffee

Gia Lai is famous for producing high-quality Robusta coffee beans, known for their unique flavor and aroma. Coffee in Gia Lai began to flourish in the early 1990s when farmers from the northern region relocated to practice new economic policies and started planting coffee.

With favorable natural conditions, along with investment and farming techniques from the local people, Gia Lai gradually developed into a large raw material area, especially in the districts of Dak Doa, Ia Grai, Chu Pah, and Chu Prong.

In the 1990s and 2000s, coffee became an important export product and accounted for a significant share of the province’s total export turnover. By October 2024, coffee exports alone reached a production of 193,000 tons, valued at 552 million USD, making up 80% of the total export turnover of the entire province.

Characteristics of the Gia Lai Coffee-Growing Region

Geographic Location

Gia Lai Province is located in the northern part of the Central Highlands (Vietnam), with an average elevation of 700-800 meters above sea level. This is one of the main reasons why Gia Lai focuses on developing Robusta coffee cultivation.
80% of Gia Lai’s land is fertile, rich in nutrients, and suitable for growing many crops, especially long-term crops.

Climate

Gia Lai has a tropical monsoon climate, with high humidity and annual rainfall, and rarely experiences natural disasters like floods, landslides, or soil erosion. The climate is divided into two distinct seasons: the rainy season and the dry season. The average annual rainfall ranges from 1750mm to 2500mm, which is ideal for Robusta coffee development.

Coffee Varieties Grown in Gia Lai

In Gia Lai, the two most cultivated coffee varieties are Robusta and Arabica, with Robusta providing the highest yield and economic value.

  • Robusta Coffee: The weather, climate, and soil conditions are favorable for Robusta cultivation. Gia Lai Robusta coffee has a high yield, large production, and resistance to pests and diseases.
  • Arabica Coffee: Arabica accounts for a small portion with the Catimor variant. This is partly due to harvesting during the rainy season, which causes the beans to be prone to mold. Additionally, the soil and rainfall conditions are not ideal for Arabica. Therefore, the annual production is quite low.

Flavor Profile of Gia Lai Coffee

Gia Lai Robusta coffee has a strong, slightly bitter taste with a high caffeine content, while Arabica has a lighter, tangy, and complex flavor.
Gia Lai coffee is highly rated for its quality and flavor, due to its closed production process from cultivation, harvesting to processing. The coffee beans are roasted and ground in their purest form, ensuring consistent color, flavor, richness, and uniformity.

Starting from October each year, Gia Lai Robusta coffee is harvested. It is then sent to factories, where it undergoes processes like sorting, drying, and preliminary processing to ensure the final product’s quality.

Challenges Facing Gia Lai Robusta Coffee

The Gia Lai coffee industry faces many challenges, such as climate change, international competition, and increasingly stringent quality demands.

Thus, investing in production technology, sustainable development, and production processes is the solution to help the coffee industry grow, increase income for local farmers, and contribute to the region’s economic development.

Expectations for the Future

In recent years, coffee production has contributed to creating jobs for hundreds of workers, improving the living standards of the local people. Especially since the 2023 coffee season, high coffee prices have helped increase the number of affluent households in the region.
According to Gia Lai’s agricultural restructuring plan for 2021-2025, the province will focus on improving the quality and value of coffee through promoting brand-building and targeting the export market.

In recent years, many businesses have focused on producing clean coffee to improve quality and export value, aiming to penetrate both the domestic and international markets.
